Beach Cottage Update

Our client had a small (single-story, 1,250 square foot) beach cottage on a spit of land on Essex Bay, and approached Hale Design Build with their renovation goals. The primary aim of the project was to preserve the home’s spirit while modernizing and expanding the space to meet 21st century efficiency standards and accommodate a larger family.

We’re proud of this one. Our team paid careful consideration to the property’s position and surroundings. We capitalized on the secluded location in wooded West Gloucester by giving each room a stunning view and the privacy needed to live on a waterway.

What started out as an old-school bungalow was transformed into a three-story brick oceanside oasis upon the project’s completion. The finished home is perfectly situated atop a naturally rocky outcropping and overlooks gorgeous tidal flats. As per the owner’s specifications, the home was renovated using all natural and environmentally sustainable materials including recycled lumber, and local Gloucester granite. The resulting look is perfectly suited to the surrounding coastal environment.

The floor plan encourages indoor/outdoor living and is made possible by custom-designed and installed folding-glass walls that open the interior living space to the exterior while providing marvelous views of the ocean. The client’s outdoor lifestyle is further supported by extensive outdoor decks as well as an outdoor shower. An additional 4000 gallon rainwater collection tank is a boon for gardening, saving water, and saving money.
